Yes, I’m a fan, and sometimes, my influences are right there on my sleeve. This happens to be one of them. This version was recorded with Slaphappy, and I think this is take three, with maybe a couple of guitar tracks added for fatness and the lead vocal replaced. Like on Away, all I do is play bass (a variation on a line that my little brother Rob wrote for this song), and sing harmonies/backups. Brent Perry supplies the guitar parts and Jon Kretzer does his best Tre Cool on drums. Mike Craig does his best unintentional Gordon Gano on vocals. I played an Ernie Ball/Music Man 5-string bass (not mine) on this one. At the time, I strictly played a 4-string Fender Jazz. It was a weird recording session for me simply because of that. It was also weird having another guy play the guitar parts I wrote. Brent did a great job, though, and since we only got to practice this one maybe 5 or 6 times before going in to record, there’s no way I can complain about the finished results. The engineer did take the balls out of Jon’s snare on the track and made it sort of whooshy, though, which kind of pissed me off. The lyrics are your simple, pedestrian, “I want her but she doesn’t want me” high school meconium. Much like New Found Glory and bands like that. Listen closely at the end for Jon’s hi-hats swooshing.

Uh, Green Day, wha?
