{"id":7,"date":"2007-05-08T16:12:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-08T16:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/musicalschizo.com\/blog\/?p=7"},"modified":"2007-05-08T16:12:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-08T16:12:00","slug":"wordplay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicalschizo.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/wordplay\/","title":{"rendered":"Wordplay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite aspects of songwriting is wordplay.<\/p>\n<p>I almost invariably try to find ways to twist words or come up with clever lines to basically make myself smile.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite things to do in a song is a thing you often see in poetry &#8211; essentially using the same sounds in alternating lines, but varying the words.<\/p>\n<p>A good example (from &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicalschizo.com\/wereallyjustdontcare.mp3\">We Really Just Don&#8217;t Care<\/a>&#8220;):<br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Nobody sings a little song just to sing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Nobody brings a little wrong just to sting<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>Or maybe this one (from &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicalschizo.com\/withoutyouwithmetonight.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Without You With Me Tonight<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; written with my brother Rob):<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><br \/>So I know that I&#8217;ll spend this evening lonely<br \/>But I can wait &#8217;cause you are my one and only<br \/>&#8216;Cause I really think you are the one for me<br \/>I would even look past infidelity<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">My evening just couldn&#8217;t be right<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Without you with me tonight<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s little things like this that make me feel like I&#8217;m accomplishing something as a lyricist &#8211; telling the story, but doing it in a tuneful and lyrically clever way &#8211; not just stringing things together in some sort of weird baroque stream-of-consciousness thing (a la Alanis Morissette &#8211; but she&#8217;s not always like that).<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is, it doesn&#8217;t work for every song, but I find it really fun to find new and interesting ways to make words go together and work together both rhythmically and sonically.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure if I wrote stories my prose would be quite flowery and precious.<\/p>\n<p>More to come&#8230;<br \/>TMS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite aspects of songwriting is wordplay.
